Two Minute Tuesday: Mastering Remote Interviews: Essential Tips for Telephone and Video Success

Telephone interviews have been common for since shortly after Thomas Edison invented the telephone.  Now many interviewers prefer a video interview over a phone interview as a more interactive way to engage candidates at the beginning of the interview process. Let’s explore some best practices for conducting telephone and video interviews.

Hi, I’m Taylor Mauer, Founder and Senior Managing Partner at Heavy Civil Resource Consultants. Today, Back with another 2 minute Tuesday Tip of the week.

With more initial interviews happening over the phone or via video, it’s crucial to make a great impression right from the start. Whether you’re a candidate preparing for these interviews or a company looking to optimize your process, these tips will help ensure success.

For telephone interviews, think of it like an open-book test. You have the advantage of using notes, but you still need to be sharp and prepared. Here are a few quick tips:

  • Turn off distractions: Make sure you’re in a quiet room away from anything that could interrupt the call.
  • Have your tools ready: Keep your resume, company research, and a pen and paper close by.
  • Stand up while you talk: Standing helps you project confidence and energy into your voice. Even though they can’t see you, the interviewer can sense your enthusiasm.

And remember, if you’re caught off guard by a surprise call, politely ask for a few minutes to get ready. This will give you a moment to focus and ensure you’re in the right mindset.

For video interviews, the stakes feel a little higher because now you’re face-to-face with your interviewer—virtually, that is. The key here is to treat it just like an in-person meeting.

  • Dress the part: Wear professional attire just as you would for an on-site interview.
  • Prepare your environment: Make sure your equipment is set up early, your camera is at eye level, and your background is tidy.
  • Posture matters: Sit up straight, don’t slouch, and project confidence through your body language.

Additionally, you can use small sticky notes off-camera with reminders of points you want to emphasize. It’s like having a cheat sheet that no one can see!

Whether it’s over the phone or on video, the way you present yourself in these interviews can make all the difference. Preparation is key, and with these tips, you’ll be set to impress every time.
